Definitions, types of: (Logic 5, APA)
a) descriptive definition:
one which classifies, by describing existing states of being;
b) differentiative definition:
one which compares unlikeness to existing states of being or not being;
c) associative definition:
one which declares likeness to existing states of being or not being;
d) action definition:
one which delineates cause and potential state of change of being by cause of existence, inexistence, action, inaction, purpose or lack of purpose.
Example:
a) a chair has legs, is made of wood, etc;
b) a chair isn't a table;
c) a chair is smaller than a table;
d) a chair is something you sit on.
These ideas where taken by Hubbard from General Semantics (Korzybski) , and he advocates the general superiority of the action definition, due to the dynamism which lacks from the other types.
